Hope for Children in Foster Care – The Foster Alliance

Great news during National Foster Care Month — The Foster Alliance, Arizona’s largest nonprofit serving children in foster care, has officially opened a permanent boutique in Flagstaff, now offering walk-in hours and free essentials for foster and kinship families.

Located at 5200 E. Cortland Blvd., the boutique is open twice a week. It provides clothing, diapers, hygiene items and more at no cost to foster families, group homes, caseworkers and court-appointed special advocates.

“It’s an honor to fill a need in the community and to support families who are working hard for the children in need of family, guardians and a home,” said Shawn Pendergast, program manager for northern Arizona, who oversees operations at the Flagstaff site.

In New Mexico, over 2,000 children are in the foster system, with about 1,000 foster homes available according to the Children, Youth and Families Department data.

For the past decade, Sophie Asher and the New Mexico Friends of Foster Children have been able to help with providing extracurricular activities and simple items such as bikes.

In 2024, The Foster Alliance provided crucial services to over 8,000 children in foster care. As we move into 2025, the need remains significant. We are calling on the community for donations and volunteers to help us continue our mission.

What We Do: Our organization is the largest provider of essential services to the foster care community. These services include clothing, diapers, wipes, hygiene kits, toys, and even birthday gifts. We aim to make sure that every child in foster care feels special and supported.

How You Can Help: Children often enter foster care without any personal belongings. Your contributions help us provide them with the essentials they need. We also support tribal nations, ensuring that our reach extends to over 12,000 children.

Volunteer with Us: Our operations rely heavily on volunteers. From sorting donations to managing our boutique, there are countless opportunities to get involved.

The Foster Alliance is the largest provider of essential services to foster families across Arizona. The organization relies on a supplier that’s headquartered in Los Angeles for a large portion of its donations of diapers and wipes.

Erica also joined Central Arizona Shelter Services as they celebrated the grand opening of The Haven, a brand-new shelter dedicated to supporting unhoused seniors in Phoenix, Arizona. Plus, Erica stopped by the American Red Cross Sound The Alarm, Save a Life Event an event were Cox employees and community leaders supported the American Red Cross Sound The Alarm, Save a Life event. A mission to install 1000 free smoke alarms in the City of Tolleson, Arizona. Erica also had a chance to catch up with Jami Carlson Director of Corporate Relations at The Foster Alliance as they discussed its mission, growth, and success of The Foster Alliance. Also, Erica celebrated at the City of Surprise 9th ninth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration and Service, an event that benefited the local community through a mobile blood drive, packing food for a local food bank, assembling hygiene kits, and writing letters of encouragement. Erica’s last visit was at the Clark County Foster Services – Holiday Celebration, an event that brought smiles, joy, and holiday cheer to foster children and their families by sharing gifts and creating memorable moments.
